The average elevation is 3,000 ft (900 m) above sea level and the lowest point is Lake Assal in Djibouti at 515 ft (157 m) below sea level. One distinctive feature of Africa is that it contains the world’s second-largest desert – the Sahara – which covers 3.5 million square miles (9 million sq km) of land. This vast desert is home to unique ecosystems and species, making it an incredible wonder of the world.
