History of the state of Colorado

First appeared on the map as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This Spanish territory of the late 16th and early 17th centuries included the southern part of the modern state. The Spaniards also coined the name Colorado , which means red. The reason for this was the red sandstone often found here.

In 1803, the United States bought from France part of the territory west of the Mississippi, referred to as Louisiana. The lands of Colorado were in disputed ownership, which led to a war over them between Spain and the United States.
